Kia ora and welcome to the Institute of Judicial Studies.

About the IJS

Welcome to the website of the New Zealand Institute of Judicial Studies. The Institute was established in July 1998. It is the professional development arm of the New Zealand judiciary and provides education programmes and resources which:

  • Support judges in the ongoing development of their judicial careers
  • Promote judicial excellence
  • Foster an awareness of developments in the law, its social context, and judicial administration.

Central to the context within which judges work is their independence from the other arms of the state. The initiative of the judiciary to develop education through the Institute of Judicial Studies recognises that education fosters responsible decision making without compromising judicial independence.
